Important reminders to help children avoid a bicycle accident

Minnesota parents have endless worries when it comes to their children's safety. Though there are not as many children riding their bicycles to school, it never hurts to teach children the basics in order to prevent a bicycle accident. For those families whose children may choose to bike to school, there are several tips that can make these trips more enjoyable and safer.

The first step is to select a bicycle that is the best fit. A child who is comfortable is more confident and can focus on riding safely. Children also need a suitable helmet that will be comfortable and stylish while providing important protection. It is recommended that youngsters are taught how to fix a flat tire and do other simple repairs if the need arises and can be completed safely.

Bicycles may need to be equipped with lights and reflectors, especially if the student will be riding in low-lighting conditions. Children also benefit from appropriate riding gear, including close-fitting rain and cold weather outerwear. Along with proper equipment and gear, it is strongly suggested that the safest route to the school or other destination be preplanned and that children and their parents become familiar with the route ahead of time.

Younger children who wish to bike to school might be able to join a bike train of other riders. This is similar to a car-pool arrangement with parents taking turns accompanying the riders safely to and from school. If there are any changes to a route, students are encouraged to communicate these changes to a responsible adult. Of course, even the most experienced rider could still be caught up in a bicycle accident. If a bike accident occurs due to the negligence of another party, Minnesota victims may have grounds to seek recovery of their damages through the state's civil justice system.
