Parking lots present serious risks for a pedestrian accident

As the cold weather approaches, Minnesota residents are gearing up for all of the challenges that winter driving poses. In addition to the hazards of snow and ice, the upcoming holiday season further increases the risk of a serious pedestrian accident befalling an unsuspecting victim. The National Safety Council has reminded the public about the dangers posed by parking lots

The NSC notes that hundreds of people are killed in parking lot accidents annually. Not surprisingly, the numbers of insurance claims reach a high point during the holiday shopping season. There are several factors that can increase the risk of a serious crash in parking lots and not all are weather-based. An NSC poll found that drivers engage in disturbing behaviors while driving through these areas.

More than half of both adult and teen drivers talk on their phones while navigating through parking areas. In addition, many drivers program their navigational tools and check off shopping lists in these circumstances. Teen drivers are more inclined to engage in personal grooming while in a parking lot while others check social media sites and take videos and pictures while behind the wheel. The NSC and local police departments recommend that drivers always follow lane markings and use turn indicators when driving through parking areas.

Both pedestrians and motorists are reminded to pay careful attention and to watch out for vehicles that are backing out. Technology can be a useful aid to motorists, but drivers are still required to physically check their surroundings while exiting parking spaces. In spite of the warnings, a number of people will suffer injuries due to the negligence of someone else. When one is hurt in a pedestrian accident, there are often significant economic burdens that increase a victim's pain and suffering. Alongside an experienced personal injury attorney in Minnesota, it may be possible to recover documented monetary damages by means of a civil lawsuit.
