Many kids here in Minnesota use bikes to get out and about during the summer. So, this time of year, it can be very important for parents to give careful attention to bicycle safety.
There are many things parents can do to try to ensure their kids are safe when out biking this summer. One is keeping their children as visible as possible.
Given the small size of kids’ bikes and the sad reality that many drivers aren’t always fully paying attention when behind the wheel (due to distractions such as cellphones), having your child stand out to drivers can be very important. It could help with reducing the likelihood of accidents.
High visibility can be especially crucial when your child is out biking during darker times of the day, such as in the morning or evening.
Here are some steps you as a parent can take to up your child’s visibility when he or she is out and about on his or her bike:
- Make sure your child’s bike has properly secured reflectors
- Put lights on your child’s bike
- Have your child wear bright clothing
- Have your child wear reflective material
- Teach your child proper hand signaling, so their movements are more predictable to drivers
So, paying careful attention to your child’s bike, your child’s biking wardrobe and your child’s biking habits can be very important as you endeavor to keep them visible and safe this summer.
We wish all families here in Minnesota a safe summer of biking.
